5 reasons to replace your existing locks

Rekeying and replacing both stop old keys working, so why replace? Because rekeying only changes the pins. If the lock itself is the problem, a new one is the answer.

1. The lock is worn out

Locks that stick, wobble or need the door pushed to turn are near the end of their life. New hardware works smoothly and protects the door from the stress of forced turning.

2. After a break-in

Even if a forced lock still turns, its internal parts may be bent. Replace damaged locks and check the strike plate and frame at the same time.

3. You want a stronger lock

Builder-grade locks are often Grade 3. Upgrading front and garage-to-house doors to a Grade 1 deadbolt makes forced entry much harder. See why deadbolts matter.

4. You want keyless or smart access

Keypad deadbolts mean no hidden spare key and no lockouts from a forgotten keyring. Codes can be changed for cleaners or guests.

5. You're tired of a ring full of keys

New locks can be keyed alike, so one key opens the front, back and side doors. Sometimes rekeying achieves the same; if the locks are different brands, replacing some is usually needed.

Cars and apartments

Car lock changes are usually needed after a theft or lost keys; see the automotive page. In an apartment, check with your landlord before changing locks; most leases require it.

Cost

Lock changes for basic locks start at $25 plus the $29 service call, and new locks carry a 3-month warranty from the contractor. See the price list and the move-in coupon.
